Breast Implant Exchange in Austin

Breast Implant Exchange

Year after year, breast augmentation remains the most popular and commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States and the Austin area.  Unfortunately, patients should realize that breast implants are not a permanent solution. Many women can plan on maintaining their implants for over 30 years, but this is not always the case.

Along with this, over time, patients should be aware that implants have the potential to fail (leak or rupture) or become firm (capsular contracture). Aging, breast shape and volume changes, or a newly desired body image are additional reasons that a person may elect to remove or exchange their implants.

In addition, a woman may require a mastopexy or breast lift at the time of their implant exchange. If you’re thinking about a breast implant exchange, for whatever reason, request a consultation with Dr. McFate today. As an Austin area cosmetic surgeon, he’ll help you decide what procedures are appropriate for you in order to meet your goals.

THE OPERATION

Typically, the breast implant exchange operation lasts between 2-4 hours depending on the number of procedures required. The operation can be performed in our office as an outpatient procedure (we feature a world-class center for plastic surgery in Austin, TX) or in a hospital setting under IV or general anesthesia. Commonly, previous scars or new incisions are used as entry points for the surgery. There may need to also be removal or manipulation of the capsule that forms around all implants.

A patient may require the placement of surgical drains for 1-2 weeks. Most Austin area breast implant exchange patients can return home the same day as surgery. A surgical bra without an underwire will be worn for several weeks. A person can expect some soreness and bruising for 1-2 weeks. Strenuous activity that will elevate the heart rate should be avoided for 2 weeks. Please contact our office and schedule a consultation with Dr. McFate to discuss all of the information we have provided and any other questions about breast implant exchange you may have. Reach out today to get started on your new image.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Women desiring a breast implant exchange in Austin or requiring removal of their implants for the reasons mentioned above, may be excellent candidates for this procedure with Dr. McFate. In addition, you may be a candidate for a mastopexy following the implant removal. Patients should be in overall good health, not currently on blood thinning medications, non-smoking, and have reasonable expectations.
