Ear Surgery in Austin

Otoplasty improves the position or size of the ears

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a straightforward procedure that corrects the protruding appearance of the ears. Many patients undergo this procedure to reduce the size of the ears and reposition them closer to the head.

This problem primarily affects children, but patients of all ages can have difficulty and embarrassment from an abnormal size or shape of the ears. If you’re considering ear surgery in Austin, TX, please request a consultation with Dr. McFate, our qualified Austin area plastic surgeon.

Am I a Good Candidate?

We ask that our Austin area ear surgery patients be greater than 6 years of age to avoid disrupting the natural growth of the ear, in good overall health, and have reasonable expectations.

Ear surgery is typically a helpful solution for disproportionately large ears, large ear lobes, ears that “stick out”, and asymmetric ears.

The Operation

Incisions are made in the area behind the ear and remain well hidden. Excess skin and cartilage is removed while sutures are placed to reshape the ear. Most ear surgeries take about 2-3 hours and can be performed as an outpatient or inpatient basis.

After surgery, a special dressing will be worn, and the patient should avoid any strenuous activity that will elevate the heart rate for two weeks. A special head band will protect the repair for several weeks. In particular, children should avoid sports or rough playing, and parents must exercise caution in order to help accomplish this.
