Who is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Patients with excess fat in various areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, and back may be good candidates for liposuction. If the patient has a concern with excess or overhanging skin in a particular area, a different procedure may be required.  We ask that our Austin area liposuction patients generally be in good overall health, have a stable weight, and possess reasonable expectations.

The Operation

Liposuction can take 1-3 hours depending on the number of treatment areas and can commonly be performed in an outpatient setting at our Austin, TX, cosmetic surgery center using IV anesthesia. Small incisions are made in the areas of concern and generally heal very well. A solution of intravenous fluid and local anesthetic is infused directly into the tissues. The fluid and fat are then aspirated with special surgical cannulas.

If liposuction is combined with other procedures, this may affect the surgical time and expected recovery.

What to Expect After Surgery?

Typically, a patient can return home after surgery the same day. A patient can expect some soreness and bruising for the next 5-7 days. We recommend special garments that can reduce these issues and improve the overall result if worn for several weeks after surgery.
