Rhinoplasty Surgery in Austin

Get The Nose You Were Meant To Have

The uniqueness of the nose is a feature that can promote harmony and provide accent to the face. It is also the first aspect of the face that enters into an interaction with another person. If a person is unhappy or embarrassed with the appearance of the nose, that person may become self-conscious and lack confidence in a public setting. The procedure to correct the nose is called a rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job. Likewise, a person may be thinking about surgery because of a breathing concern. It is important that Austin area plastic surgeon Dr. McFate evaluate the specific cause of the obstruction and correctly repair the problem.

As you may have noticed in the Austin area, rhinoplasty continues to grow in popularity with both men and women. Every nose is unique and so is the specific procedure performed to correct the different deformities. Dr. McFate is fully trained with the latest techniques to help you successfully reach your goals.

Is Nose Surgery Right For Me?

Patients requesting a rhinoplasty should be at least 16 years of age, in overall good health, not taking blood thinning medications, and have reasonable expectations. Typically, the nasal deformity should represent a problem that the patient has dealt with for some time. Many patients may also suffer from difficulty breathing through the nose since a young age or after some trauma.

You may be a good candidate for nose surgery if you suffer from any of the following concerns:

  • Difficulty breathing through one or both sides of the nose
  • Droopy nasal tip
  • Crooked nose
  • Disproportionate nose to the face
  • Bump or hump on nasal bridge
  • Wide nose

The Operation

Rhinoplasty surgery usually lasts 2-4 hours and can be performed on an outpatient or hospital basis. Typically, general or IV anesthesia with local anesthetic can be utilized for the surgery. Incisions are made primarily on the inside of the nose but may also be required on the small area of the underside of the nose (columella). During the operation, Dr. McFate may repair or reshape the cartilage, bone, and soft tissue. In functional or nasal obstructions, the correction of the problem is addressed by repairing the septum, reshaping cartilages, or excising large turbinates. With revisional rhinoplasty or repeat rhinoplasty, the operation can take longer and present additional challenges.

There may be limits on reaching specific results. Sometimes additional cartilage is required and taken from the ear or rib in order to effectively reshape the nose. Following surgery, patients should refrain from any strenuous activity that will elevate their heart rate for two weeks. Patients typically wear a splint for 7-10 days. In most cases, swelling remains for several months up to a year before a person can visualize their final nasal appearance.
