Tummy Tuck Surgery in Austin

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck,” is an excellent and common surgical procedure to correct excess abdominal skin and soft tissue. There are many causes for this excess skin, such as pregnancy and significant weight loss. In addition, the abdominal muscles can be tightened to help correct a bothersome bulge and give a flatter, more defined contour of the abdomen. Dr. McFate is a board certified plastic surgeon in Austin, TX, and is fully trained in the latest techniques of abdominal contouring to produce optimal results*.

In many cases, a patient may need liposuction in addition to or in place of an abdominoplasty. A consultation with Dr. McFate can help you decide if an abdominoplasty in Austin is the right way to help you reach your goals.  In addition, many times an abdominoplasty can be combined safely and efficiently with other procedures such as breast augmentation depending on the individual goals of the patient.  By combining procedures in the same surgery, patients can minimize additional downtime and cost.  Make sure you visit our tummy tuck FAQ to read the answers to our patients’ most commonly asked questions.

Who is a Tummy Tuck Candidate?

Patients with excess skin primarily below the umbilicus (belly button) and a bulge in the midline of the abdomen from a weakening of the abdominal muscles are candidates for an abdominoplasty.  Generally, patients should be in good health, have no plans for future pregnancy, be non-smokers, and have a stable weight.

Patients should be willing to accept a low abdominal scar extending from hip to hip and a small scar around the umbilicus in most cases.  After the procedure, a patient can expect to have an improved mid body appearance with removal of the excess and sometimes overhanging skin, flatter defined contour, and elimination of stretch marks or other abdominal skin defects. What to Expect During and After Surgery?

As with all of our surgical procedures, the first step is a comprehensive history and examination with Dr. McFate to create a personalized precise surgical plan.  Upon the day of surgery, you will be welcomed with warm smiles from our entire surgical team ready to make your experience comfortable and enjoyable.  Typically, a patient undergoing a tummy tuck in our accredited, state of the art surgical facility in Austin, will be able to return home the same day following surgery as it is expected to be an outpatient surgical procedure.

Dr. McFate will discuss and utilize some of the newest techniques for an optimal result and recovery.  Exparel is a medication that is administered during surgery that will provide post operative relief for 96 hours following surgery.  Exparel combined with oral medications typically keeps post operative discomfort to a minimum.  Dr. McFate performs a technique of progressive tension sutures to again provide post operative comfort and minimize scarring.

At times, the need may rise for a drainage tube to stay in place for 1-2 weeks. A supportive abdominal binder will be provided to be worn at all times following surgery.  After being discharged home, a patient should expect limited physical activity for 2 weeks. Strenuous exercise with no restructions can resume after 8 weeks usually.
